Mitigation to restore & protect wetlands for Minnesota’s future generations

Need to offset unavoidable wetland impacts through high-quality mitigation? Credits from the Lake Superior and Mississippi Mitigation Banks are your ideal solution.

The Lake Superior and Mississippi Mitigation Banks are large-scale wetland restoration sites owned and operated by Ecosystem Investment Partners (EIP)—the country’s leading provider of environmental credits. Mitigation credits from EIP enable you to satisfy the requirements of your environmental permit quickly and cost-effectively while eliminating liability exposure. Credit purchases also promote large scale conservation and restoration of Minnesota’s wetlands for future generations.

The Lake Superior and Mississippi Mitigation Banks are approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to fulfill mitigation requirements of Section 404 Clean Water Act permits (1) and the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR) to fulfill the mitigation requirements of the Wetland Conservation Act (WCA).(2)

Restoration Initiative

The Lake Superior Mitigation Bank site was originally ditched and partially drained in the early 1900’s in an effort to convert the area into productive farmland. These efforts failed to produce the desired farmland, but severely altered the property’s unique bog wetland habitats. Starting in 2013, EIP initiated an innovative land acquisition and restoration effort on these lands that will ultimately restore and protect over 20,000 acres of the internationally renowned Sax-Zim Bog Important Bird Area (IBA).This unique conservation assemblage now provides habitat for a wide variety of rare and important species.

At the Mississippi Mitigation Bank site, EIP converted approximately 2,000 acres of cultivated rice paddies and agricultural fields into a variety of wetland types by removing dikes, ditches, and hydrology-altering equipment to restore natural wetland hydrology. Migratory birds, especially ducks, now colonize this restored habitat.
